6G to Bring Physical, Digital Worlds Closer, Experts Say

While the fifth generation of cellular connectivity (5G) is being deployed, and while new versions of the new radio are implemented, researchers and industry stakeholders are working to define and create the standards for the sixth generation (6G).

Cellular communications have advanced faster over the past two decades than any other technology. That span of time included the arrival of 3G, the first worldwide standard bringing data communication that enabled the arrival of smartphones, and the current 5G networks, which offer massive IoT, low-latency and gigabit speeds. 5G allows connecting billions of smartphones, sensors, wearables and critical infrastructure around the world.

Research on the next generation of wireless communication, 6G, is underway. From universities, infrastructure providers and semiconductor manufacturers to device makers, the stakeholders are working to define what 6G will be and how it can connect the physical and digital worlds.

EE Times sat down recently with Marie Hogan, head of 6G portfolio strategy at Ericsson, and Adrian Baschnonga, lead analyst for media & telecommunications at EY, to learn more about what 6G will look like and how it could change the way we communicate in the next decade.
